Fire & Glass: Intro to Enameling

Learn the basics of kiln-fired enameling in this beginner-friendly 4-hour class. Working with sifted enamels (powdered glass) on copper, you'll explore opaque and transparent colors using stencils and a variety of mark-making techniques to create a unique piece of jewelry — an earring set, pin, pendant, or magnet.
Enameling on metal has a long global history, used in both utilitarian objects and fine art for over 3,000 years. One of the best-known methods is cloisonné, in which enamel colors are held in place by thin metal strips to create intricate, detailed designs. Modern enameling in this country saw a heyday during the midcentury modern period: artists working in the 1950s and '60s pushed the medium's boundaries, embracing freer, more experimental approaches. Today, enamel artists work across a wide range of techniques to create contemporary pieces in an array of styles.
This class is limited to five participants, so you will receive lots of personalized instruction from Judy as well as time with the kilns.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR
Judy Paolini draws on her background as an award-winning graphic and product designer and has immersed herself in a range of fine craft. In recent years, she has discovered a passion for the art of vitreous enamel on copper. A resident of both Port Townsend and Palm Springs, Calif., Judy focuses on pattern and color, using brilliant tones and bold shapes to express her love of modernist design. Her work is available in gift shops at the Palm Springs Art Museum, the Palm Springs Architecture and Design Museum and the Tacoma Art Museum, among other venues.
